When it comes to preserving the beauty of bronze sculptures, proper care and maintenance are essential. Bronze is a durable material, but it can still be susceptible to damage if not handled correctly. In this article, we will look at tips on how to care for bronze sculptures to ensure they last for generations to come, just like the stories that inspired them.
Patination
The patination on the surface of our bronze sculptures has been developed using a traditional and ancient method. We bury the sculpture by a river in the iron rich soil that we have on the farm here in Northern Ireland, resulting in a unique final finish. The process is slow and could take many months, but the results are worth the wait and the result is that each finish is different.
Dust Regularly
Once the unique patina has developed, we coat the sculpture in a layer of our own natural bees wax. After this, a little light dusting should be all that is needed to maintain the finish for at least a year. We advise using a clean, soft, dry cloth for dusting and to avoid abrasive materials and harsh chemicals that would damage the surface of the bronze.
Apply Wax
As time passes, the colour of the bronze sculpture will continue to deepen. To maintain the current patination, we suggest reapplying a layer of any natural paste wax, once a year. Simply apply your chosen wax with a soft cloth and gently buff the sculpture all over. Be sure to use a wax specifically designed for bronze and follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
Other Cleaning and Maintenance Advice
If the bronze gets very dirty, we advise using a little mild soap and water. Rinse well and dry the surface completely before reapplying wax. If in any doubt, please don't hesitate to get in touch and we would be happy to advise you.
